Recycling electrical and electronic products - what you need to know
On 1 July 2007, new government regulations called the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came into force to encourage people to arrange collection or recycling of old electrical products, rather than throwing them away.

Why should waste electrical goods be recycled?
Recycling is better for the environment. Electrical waste is increasing by around 5% each year and each of us should do our best to reduce this figure.

Over 75% of waste electrical goods end up in landfill, where lead and other toxins contained in electrical goods can cause soil and water contamination. This can have a very harmful effect on the natural habitat, wildlife and also human health. When situated near populated areas these toxins can cause problems to communities as their water and soil is polluted. These problems will be with us for a long time and since we only have 1 planet (at the moment) we must all do our very best to reduce all kinds of waste to a minimum.

Many of the electrical items that we throw away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling items helps to save natural resources and also reduces the environmental and health risks associated with sending waste electrical goods to landfill. As we all change our consumer items with increased frequency; the problem is compounded.

How can I recycle my old electrical and electronic products?
There are many ways you can avoid turning your old hifi into waste. We are also aware that most of you will not want to throw equipment away. For a start we will happily offer “trade in” on working equipment on a one for one basis. This means that not only will we take the unit from you, but we will actually offer you a value for the item.

Additionally you may wish to pass the item on to a family member or to sell it on ebay. This process is simple and goods often command premiums that will go some way to paying the cost of the replacement items. Finally you can always return the item to us on a one for one basis. We will then ensure the item is disposed of and recycled appropriately.

If you are local and we are personally delivering items to you; simply ask our delivery people and they will take items back from you FREE OF CHARGE and on a one for one basis. Just ensure the item is unplugged and ready for us to take it away.

How will I know whether the new products I buy can be recycled?
All new electrical and electronic products sold now carry the ‘crossed out wheelie bin’ logo to help you identify which products are recyclable.

You do not need to have purchased new equipment to be able to recycle your old appliances.

What if my new appliance is coming direct from the manufacturer, will I still get free collection?
Unfortunately we can not offer free collection on Supplier Home Delivery products. We can however do this for a small charge. Please
email us if you would like us to arrange this for you.

What happens to old equipment?
The products are sent to a local recycling centre where as much of it as possible is recycled or disposed of in the correct manner.

You may also like to know additional things that Moorgate is doing to help the environment.

·          We use recycled packaging wherever possible.

·          We use low energy light bulbs throughout our store

·          Because we sell high quality equipment, it lasts longer and can be easily upgraded; without the need for it to be replaced.

We are constantly looking for ways to waste less and help the environment. We will update this section as we do so.

Please email us if you seek clarification on any of these issues.
