Rega RX series is the latest addition to the Rega range. On the face of it the three new models look as if they are closely related to the outgoing RS series but in fact nothing could be further from the truth. In fact the three designs were blank page from inception to prototype and are massively different. Here we’ll give you a run down of the three models starting with……………

The Rega RX1 compact loudspeaker

Rega RX

The RX-One is very different to the RS1. You get a sense of it the moment you unpack the box and lift the speakers up. Dimensionally they are about ten percent larger and this has enabled Rega to use larger drive units. They also weigh twice as much and the cabinets are far more rigid and purposeful. Even the drive units are different.

Rega claim the RX-ONE loudspeaker delivers balance, detail and dynamics thanks to a unique handmade set of Rega designed drivers and crossovers. The newly developed DX-125 bass/mid-range driver (using a doped  paper cone) is at the heart of the RX range and combines perfectly with the Rega ZRR high frequency unit. Both mounted in a larger cabinet constructed from 18mm MDF and covered in a choice of beautiful real wood veneers. The end result is a slight increase in efficiency and this makes the RX-One a better match with a wider range of amplifiers and all-in-one systems.

The RX-ONE is designed to be used on stands, a sturdy shelf or mounted directly on the wall via the RX-ONE wall bracket. We’ve not seen these yet. Imaging and bass response can be tuned by adjusting the distance of the speaker from the rear and side walls. As with all loudspeakers, this will depend on the size of room, flooring and furnishings therefore some simple experiments trying different distances will help optimise the performance to your surroundings.

In our demo room and connected to a Naim UnitiQute the RX-One was a substantial improvement over the RS1 and sounded both musical and fast. Bass was detailed and extended from a small box. We’re also delighted with the magnetic grille which covers the main drive unit. Basically the magnets actually hold the grille on! Sounds simple but many designs simply don’t.

After about ten hours these speakers sounded extremely good and stood up extremely well to the similarly prices B&W compacts and the LINN Majic 109’s. We’re putting a few more hours on them right now to ensure they sound at their best when you get to listen to them :)

The Rega RX-Three floor standing speaker

Rega RX

Again the RX-Three is a great deal heavier than the RS but is only a little larger. Again it uses a side-firing bass driver to add more depth and dynamics but it never loses control or sounds “boomy”. The speakers look great and are far more purposeful. The added weight also makes them easier to get nice and rigid too.

The Rega RX-THREE loudspeaker system delivers balance, detail and dynamics thanks to a unique  handmade set of three Rega designed drivers and crossover. The newly developed DX-125 bass mid-range driver (using a doped paper cone) is at the heart of the RX range and combines perfectly with the Rega ZRR high frequency and RR125.8 bass unit. These custom units are mounted in a newly designed cabinet enclosure constructed from 18mm MDF and covered in a choice of three, beautiful, real wood veneers. The RX-THREE will  integrate perfectly into any home and deliver exceptional performance and musicality with a smooth and accurate bass response.

Bass response and imaging can be tuned by adjusting the distance of the speaker from the rear and side walls. As with all loudspeakers, this will be dependant on the size of room, flooring and furnishings, therefore some simple experiments trying different distances will help optimise the performance to your surroundings. If the bass becomes ‘boomy’,  you can position the side firing speakers inwards to suppress any unwanted bass responses.

We auditioned these with an Apollo R and Brio R combination. Whilst technically these speakers deserve better we were hard pushed to fault the result. The Brio R punches well above it’s weight and the RX-Three lapped it up. At £1298 we wanted to be impressed and as soon as we had a few hours on them we were. Rega are known for musicality and these follow that philosophy beautifully.

 RX-Five floor standing loudspeakers

Rega RX

We’ve had the longest with these and we’ve had chance to use them with a wide range of electronics. They’re not fully run-in yet but already they are sounding musical, fast and dynamic with lots of detail and the sort of presentation that makes you want to listen.

RX-FIVE is designed to deliver  balance, detail and dynamics thanks to a unique handmade set of three Rega designed drivers and crossover. The newly developed DX-125 bass mid-range driver (using a doped paper cone) is at the heart of the RX range and combines perfectly with the Rega ZRR high frequency and RR7.8 bass unit. These custom units are mounted in a newly designed cabinet enclosure constructed from 18mm MDF and covered in a choice of three beautiful real wood veneers. The RX-FIVE will integrate perfectly into any home and deliver exceptional performance and musicality with a smooth and accurate bass response.

Again the side-firing bass means you can “tune” the speaker to suit your room and your requirements. We generally prefer them bass driver out but in a smaller room this would likely be reversed. We’ve used the RX-Five with Naim Audio amps (Nait XS2 and a SuperUniti) and also with the Elicit R and they’ve performed convincingly on each occasion.  £1698 is the retail price.

As with all things we’d love you to listen to them. Let us know if you’d like a demo. We are also happy to trade in your existing speakers against some of these. Contact us for more details.
