Building a good hi-fi system is easy and fun

Hi-fi magazines seem to make it hard to choose a hi-fi system. As a result many people buy their systems from supermarkets because it’s easy. But this can be a massive mistake. Here are a few useful tips when choosing equipment.
If you want good sound, the source is all important. The best amp and speakers in the World will sound terrible if what you are playing through them is poor. If you intend to use a computer or i-POD as your source; make sure they are set up to store music losslessly. We can help you with this but don’t trust the device settings “out of the box” (Apple in particular).

Once the source is good, the next item of importance is the amplifier. The amplifier only needs to do two things. The first is to NOT or corrupt the signal you are putting into it. The second is to control the loudspeakers. That is all an amplifier needs to do but then again both of those things are very complex.

Choose loudspeakers last. They are the last component in the signal path and are incapable of reproducing quality (no matter how good they are) if they are not given quality to start with. That’s not to say speakers are unimportant, but simply that they depend on the signal quality and the ability of the amplifier. But if you follow this reasoning you would not wish to spend the lion’s share of your budget on speakers as this can produce unsatisfactory results.

Underpinning all of this is listening. All you need to know is what you like. And trust me you will know it when you hear it.
