Fyne Audio

Fyne Audio – now on demo

5012

A good friend introduced us to Scottish-based loudspeaker manufacturer, FYNE AUDIO. Fyne Audio is brand new, but the 7-strong management team brings an enviable pedigree of over 200 years’ audio industry experience (working at Tannoy).  Additionally, a recruitment programme is underway to bring in even more industry talent. We are seeking more team players with the passion and creative skills to help achieve our goal of designing and manufacturing an exceptional range of high performance loudspeakers.

We needed new speakers like we needed a dose of something unpleasant but we nodded politely and sat down with the F501 floorstander to put it through its paces. Initially we used a Naim Uniti Nova but as we grew to like this speaker we also partnered it with a Sugden A21SE and a very high quality SME record player that we’ve been servicing.

f500

The 500 series is made up of three models and starts with the compact 500 that is pictured above.  The F500 series is based around an IsoFlareTM point source drive unit; technology which our Technical Director, Dr. Paul Mills, has had considerable experience with. Our technical team, responsible for the audio performance and mechanical build of this type of driver, have many decades of experience between them. Combining Fyne Audio’s IsoFlareTM driver into a rigid cabinet, with a cleverly designed porting system, ensures optimal in-room performance.

Floor standing models in the F500 series use a rigid MDF plinth with large floor coupling spikes giving stability to ensure well-controlled bass performance and further enhancing stereo imaging. Additionally, the spikes can be adjusted from above the plinth allowing easier levelling of the speaker. The cabinets are crafted using real wood veneers and are available in choice of dark oak or black oak.

BASSTRAXTM PORT SYSTEM

The bookshelf and floorstanding models employ an internal, downwards-firing port system. Below the port, a Tractrix profile diffuser (patent applied for) converts plain wave port energy to a spherical 360-degree wave front, integrating energy uniformly into the room. This clever design ensures that the loudspeaker is less critical of room positioning.

CROSSOVER

Low-loss, laminated core inductors and audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors are used exclusively throughout the F500 series crossovers. The result is an exceptionally clean signal path and very low crossover losses, ensuring the very best in detail resolution and musical communication.

But for now – back to the 501. We were really impressed by this speaker. It is difficult to point out any specific area for praise because the whole performance was coherent and natural sounding. Some speakers seem to leap about and shout “me me” but we’ve discovered this characteristic tends to wear and quickly becomes fatiguing. The 501 never did that.

Tonally it’s quite a neutral speaker. It is also fairly easy to drive and the Sugden had no problem drawing masses of detail and insight from the 501. Interestingly enough all three of us priced the speaker at just under £2000 – which made it’s actual £1199 retail seem like exceptionally good value. One might almost say Fyne value!

cutaway

A few weeks later we also had a listen to the F500; a high quality compact speaker with a retail price of £600. We’re delighted to report that they share a lot of the same technology and you can hear it a mile off. Especially at this price. Such a seductive and open speaker isn’t normally to be found at this price.

For now we’re starting with the F500 and the F501 as detailed above. Fyne make more speakers and we’ll report back on those as we hear them. But for now we are delighted (and somewhat surprised) to be announcing a new loudspeaker brand joining the Moorgate range.

The F501 is on demo now.
